Annual Meeting of St. Basil Episcopal Church January 28, 2007 The Annual Meeting of St. Basil Episcopal Church was held January 28, 2007, in the church Parish Hall. The Rev. Chris Kenney offered the blessing. A potluck luncheon followed at 11:40 AM. Senior Warden, John Day, called the meeting to order at 12:20 PM. A quorum was established and a secretary appointed to take the minutes of the meeting.
John Day, in his written report, noted that we currently have the funding for either a Priest or Deacon every Sunday, and John expressed his appreciation to Jerry Buffington for his efforts in obtaining clergy while serving on the Worship Committee as Chair. John also expressed his thanks to all those assuming leadership positions in the church as well as individuals willing to give their time and service to St. Basil's.
In the Junior Warden's written report, Anne Austin reported the purchase of a new refrigerator, ice machine repair, and the installation of new faucets for the kitchen. Also several electric roasters have been replaced, all of which will allow for easier preparation of food to serve our community in fundraising projects, and also for church activities. There is a need for roof repairs over the Parish Hall. The roofing contractor has been contacted. The rectory is rented through August, 2007. Anne acknowledged the assistance of Dan Powhatan and Vernon Brown.
As Worship Committee Chair, Jerry Buffington announced the hope of providing all Eucharist Services for the coming year, depending on our financial ability to pay for these services.
The Office Worker report was prepared by Betty Randolph who noted that currently the office is staffed only on Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. St. Basil members are invited to volunteer for this service.
In the Treasurer's Report, Jerry Buffington noted that all of our accounts are significantly better than they were at the end of 2005. For 2006, we had 24 pledging units and nearly all pledges were paid in full and speaks to the commitment of those supporting St. Basil's. A new budget for 2007 was enclosed with the report.
Donna Musgrave, UTO chair, reported a total of $460.40 given to the United Thank Offering for 2006. These gifts enrich the lives of people around the world, and continue to assist churches and projects. Wanda Cantrell, Altar Flower Fund chair, reported an ending balance of $242.37 in the fund, and expressed her gratitude to those giving generously to the fund.
Peggy Hall, Altar Guild Directress, noted the challenges faced in the past year in setting the altar for the various types of services that we have had, and noted that St. Basil is fortunate to have such an active and hard-working altar guild. Peggy also reported that the Prayer Group meets in the office of St. Basil's each Wednesday morning at 9:30. This group prays for all persons listed on the prayer board in the office. Members of St. Basil's are invited to join in the prayer group whenever possible. Peggy also reported that the church library is available to all, and operates on the honor system. The church library is in addition to the book table in the Parish Hall for exchange of popular books.
Linda Brown, Outreach Chair, listed the many contribution made by St. Basil's during the past year. Angel Tree Ministry, CARE food pantry, C.P.C. club, Guild of the Christ Child, Hope House, Camp New Hope and other local charities.
As President of ECW, Linda Brown also reported that in 2006 that ECW continues to raise funds by hosting luncheons, craft items, and private donation for Outreach projects as described above. The next order of business was the election of Sr. and Jr. Wardens; having a term of two years for the Sr. Warden, and a term of one year for the Jr. Warden. John Day was nominated to return as Sr. Warden and Dan Powhatan was nominated for Jr. Warden. Both were elected by majority vote.
John Day announced three openings on the Bishop's Committee for at large members to serve a term of two years. There was discussion with Vernon Brown suggesting reducing the size of the Bishop's Committee from seven members to five members. This was put to a vote, with the majority preferring the Bishop's Committee to remain at the current level of seven members.
Those nominated for service on the Bishop's Committee were: Jim Malone, Wanda Cantrell, Maxine Shaber, Joe Suse, and Jerry Buffington. Jim Malone and Joe Suse were elected by paper ballot. A run-off between Wanda Cantrell and Jerry Buffington was decided by paper ballot, with Wanda Cantrell being elected.
Convention Delegates were discussed and Linda Brown was selected by acclaimation. Nita Hayes and Maxine Shaber were nominated as alternates. Nita Hayes received the majority vote.
There was discussion of the percentage of pledging members by Anne Austin. Jerry Buffington reported approximately 90 to 95% of the membership of St. Basil's pledging.
Tom Carlile suggested revisiting the subject of a burglar alarm system for the church. The new Jr. Warden, Dan Powhatan, offered to look into this.
It was also mentioned that the Brotherhood of St. Andrew was interested in community involvement and was open to suggestions in this area.
There being no further business, meeting was adjourned at 1:10 PM
